If you a having problems taking readings for a periodic survey, these checks will help you if there is a problem with your test cane.
How to Test for Continuity with a Multimeter
With a multi-meter's on resistance or continuity check, these points should be shorts.
1. Reference cell jack (where the reference cell screws into the bottom of the cane), to the black banana jack that plugs into the DVM
2. Alligator clip on red wire, to the jack on the reel where the red banana jack plugs in
3. Red banana jack that plugs into the reel, to the red banana jack the goes to the DVM
Next, check that all of those points are NOT shorted to the top or bottom metal tubes of the cane
To check the continuity of the trigger button and the yellow cable that goes to the DVM, place leads on pins 1 and 2 as pictured in the diagram below. There should only be a short when the trigger button is depressed (pin 2 is unused).
