Use these checks when a newly installed Bullhorn RMU won't send data or won't connect to the cellular or satellite network.
Applies to: Bullhorn RM510C, RM510S, RM520, RM540, RM4210, RM4250, RM1250, RM3250. Not for the RM4015 or RM4020.
Note: Before you start, have these ready:
- The unit powered on, with its supply voltage in spec
- The FieldPro app, connected to the unit by Bluetooth
- A smartphone on the same carrier (AT&T or Verizon LTE-M) to check coverage at the site
- The unit's serial number
Warning: Stay at least 8 inches (20 cm) away from the cellular antenna while the unit is transmitting.
Steps
-
Check the antenna. Look at the coax cable for bad crimps, water or damage. Make sure the SMA connector is threaded on tight and not cross-threaded. Mount the antenna upright, with at least 2 feet of clearance from metal.
You should see: a dry, undamaged cable, a tight connector and an upright antenna.
-
Watch the cellular status light. Fast flashing means the modem is searching for the network. Wait 3 minutes.
You should see: the fast flashing stops. If it keeps flashing fast for more than 5 minutes, or the light is solid red, the unit can't register on the network. Go to step 3.
-
In FieldPro, tap Review Unit Information. Read the Signal Strength (RSSI / RSRP) and the modem status.
You should see: -100 dBm or better (-85 dBm or better is excellent), and the SIM ICCID and IMEI recognized with no "SIM Error" or "Modem Not Detected".
-
In Bullhorn Web, check that the unit's serial number is assigned to an active billing Cost Center, and that the unit isn't Decommissioned or Suspended.
You should see: the unit on an active Cost Center, with an active status.
-
In FieldPro, tap Send Test Message. Then refresh the unit's Packets tab in Bullhorn Web.
You should see: the cellular light blinks fast while it sends, then a confirmation flash, and a new packet in the Packets tab.
-
Still failing? Remove all power for 30 seconds, power it back on, and send another test message.
You should see: a new packet in the Packets tab.
If It Didn't Work
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Signal worse than -105 dBm | Poor or marginal signal | Move the antenna higher, then test again |
| "SIM Error" or "Modem Not Detected" in FieldPro | The unit can't read its SIM or modem | Submit a support case with the serial number |
| Unit shows Suspended or Decommissioned, or has no active Cost Center | Its network access may be suspended | Assign it to an active Cost Center, or submit a support case |
